Returning to Tianzifang feels like stepping back into a familiar dream — a blend of nostalgia and discovery.

I used to live nearby, and coming back, I wanted to see if this charming maze of alleys still carried the same soul.

Tianzifang is fascinating because it’s a fusion of French Concession lanes, Shikumen houses, and old factory buildings.

Every few steps, the atmosphere changes — like walking through different decades of Shanghai’s story.

I always enter from Lane 210, Taikang Road, where the charm begins.

That route leads past Chen Yifei’s art studio area, where the creative vibe is strongest.

You’ll find galleries, craft shops, and handmade boutiques — sometimes even artists painting outdoors.

Unlike the polished feel of Xintiandi, Tianzifang still breathes everyday Shanghai life:

locals hanging laundry, chatting by the old walls, children running through narrow lanes.

Yet, it’s also full of life —

from traditional goods like snow cream, qipaos, and paper cuttings,

to cozy cafés, cocktail bars, and aromatherapy shops tucked between them.

Grab a stinky tofu or iced tea, wander without a plan, and just let the alleys guide you.

You’ll hear different languages echoing through the lanes — tourists from all over —

but somehow, it still feels like the same Tianzifang I remember:

a place both old and new,

vintage yet alive.
